Seven steps to help you become the person you really want to be

Fit4TheGames Owner Gavin Nugent presents you with concrete strategies for your personal transformation.

As humans, we should not stop growing. No living being should!  We are constantly evolving and reaching for the stars as long as we live!

In order to make progress in life, to become healthier and happier, it is necessary to reinvent yourself again and again.

Reinventing yourself is crucial to your physical and mental well-being - unless you're happy with your current situation because it's already the best you've dared to hope for in life.

“A transformation is not a project that will eventually be completed.”

– Marc Opelt (OTTO)

Reinventing yourself offers endless opportunities to discover new areas of your own personality and thus develop yourself further as a person. If there is something about you that makes you unhappy, transform it into something that makes you happy and in this way reinvent yourself - inside and out.

The following seven steps can help you become the person you really want to be.

1. Look at yourself from the outside.

How we see ourselves is often inextricably linked to our emotions. This prevents us from making objective decisions that change things for the better.

Try to think of yourself as an artist reviewing his latest work: if you see something you don't think is right, just change it - without emotion!

If you look at yourself like a painting or sculpture, you will realize that you are always a work in progress - and will not feel sad or upset when you identify something that needs to change. You just change it!

2. Focus on the habit that will create the desired change.

We often only focus on the “problem” instead of looking for the habit that will create the exact change we so desperately want to achieve.

A good example is trying to solve the problem of being overweight by doing lots of crunches instead of accepting that the habit that is actually getting you into trouble is poor diet.

To truly reinvent yourself, find the one habit at the center of what makes you happy and focus on changing it one step at a time.

3. Make time to practice every day - without excuses or exceptions.

Change or transformation is of great importance to you? Then you have to acknowledge that it's not something you can only do occasionally or on a daily basis.

Making a lasting change requires a lifestyle change. This in turn requires daily commitment: the new habit must replace the old one, without any conscious effort being required.

4. Set realistic goals.

You can't decide from one day to the next that you're only going to eat steamed chicken and broccoli for the rest of your life. That will not happen!

By accepting that a bad habit cannot be fixed immediately, you can successfully replace it in the long term. For example, you could initially plan to eat a healthy source of protein with every main meal for a period of 10 days and then reevaluate your strategy.

5. Always remember to “look in the mirror”!

This doesn't mean that you should actually look in the mirror all the time, but rather that you should often reflect on your progress and the seriousness of your goals.

If you notice something going off track, you have a much better chance of correcting it if you catch it early and react quickly. You need to get used to asking yourself difficult questions or enlisting the support of others (like a coach) so you can make quick corrections.

6. Avoid “yes-men.” Surround yourself with people who tell you the truth.

If those closest to you are constantly trying not to hurt your feelings, you may be in trouble. In our professional and private lives, we need people who are not afraid to tell us the truth, to see through us and not to mince words.

If you let these trusted people know that you are unhappy, they will certainly be willing (and able) to help you identify and name your weak points.

7. Get used to taking risks!

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.”

–Jessie Potter

You will never become the person you want to become if you don't change. Transformation and reinvention are only possible when you step out of your comfort zone.

Trying new things and testing new habits is the only way to change for the better.

If you are not willing to take that first step into the unknown, you are destined to always remain as you are.
